Into the Wilderness (week 7) Day 5

Before you read God’s Word today, ask for His help by praying this short prayer:
Lord, quiet my heart and settle my mind. Help me set aside the distractions and busyness around me. Let Your Word do more than fill my mind with knowledge; let it change my heart. Show me what is true, correct me where I need it, and guide me in how I should live. Lord, help me not only to hear it, but to receive it and obey it. Draw me closer to You through this time and continue growing me to live like Jesus. Amen.

Psalm 119:97-112

[97] Oh, how I love your law!

I meditate on it all day long.

[98] Your commands are always with me

and make me wiser than my enemies.

[99] I have more insight than all my teachers,

for I meditate on your statutes.

[100] I have more understanding than the elders,

for I obey your precepts.

[101] I have kept my feet from every evil path

so that I might obey your word.

[102] I have not departed from your laws,

for you yourself have taught me.

[103] How sweet are your words to my taste,

sweeter than honey to my mouth!

[104] I gain understanding from your precepts;

therefore I hate every wrong path.

[105] Your word is a lamp for my feet,

a light on my path.

[106] I have taken an oath and confirmed it,

that I will follow your righteous laws.

[107] I have suffered much;

preserve my life, Lord, according to your word.

[108] Accept, Lord, the willing praise of my mouth,

and teach me your laws.

[109] Though I constantly take my life in my hands,

I will not forget your law.

[110] The wicked have set a snare for me,

but I have not strayed from your precepts.

[111] Your statutes are my heritage forever;

they are the joy of my heart.

[112] My heart is set on keeping your decrees

to the very end.

Reflection:
Reread (v.105) God’s Word is described as a lamp for our feet and a light for our path. This imagery points to guidance in both the immediate steps we take and the longer direction of our lives. This verse also implies that without God’s Word, we naturally walk in darkness—uncertain, prone to missteps, and easily misled. But Scripture brings clarity, correction, and stability. It doesn’t just inform; it directs. The question is: am I letting God’s Word light my next step, or am I trying to navigate life in the dark on my own?

Pray Lord, You have been faithful even when we have wandered. You have spoken clearly, provided patiently, corrected lovingly, and called us toward life. Forgive us for the places where we have delayed, resisted, excused, or pretended Your will was unclear. Teach us to love You, listen to Your voice, and hold fast to You. Help us stop circling the same wilderness when obedience could carry us forward. Give us courage to choose life this week. In Jesus’ name, amen.
