Baptism is the God-given picture of ourwith Jesus in His death, burial, and resurrection. (Romans 6:1-11)
1) Baptism identifies us with the death and sacrifice of Jesus. (vs.3)
- Jesus did not die merely to make bad people behave a little better. He died to put our old, sinful life to death. In baptism, we identify ourselves with that death. (Romans 6:6)
2) Baptism buries the old life in a watery grave.
(vs.4; Colossians 2:12)
- The language of burial in the Bible helps explain why the early church baptized by immersion. The person is lowered beneath the water like someone being placed into a grave and then raised out of it. The mode reflects the message.
- Greek word for baptize or baptism: βαπτίζω (baptizō) literally means to dip, immerse, submerge in water, to wash or cleanse by dipping or submerging.
3) Baptism raises us to walk in a new life. (vs.4)
- We rise to newness of life with:
- A new identity: We belong to Christ.
- A new allegiance: Jesus is Lord.
- A new power: The Holy Spirit is at work
- A new direction: We now pursue obedience and holiness.
- A new purpose: We live to love and glorify God and participate in His mission.
- A new family: We are joined to the community of believers, the family of God.
Romans 6:8
