Mark 10:35-45
1) Our world teaches us to climb. Jesus teaches us to carry a towel. (vs. 35-37)
2) They wanted crowns of glory, but Jesus offers a cup of suffering. (vs. 38-40)
3) The disciple’s reaction reveals the real disease: jealousy and pecking order, I want to be #1. (vs. 41)
- Question: Where do you get miffed when you’re not treated like you
think you deserve?
4) Jesus names the world’s leadership model and totally rejects it. (vs. 42-44)
- In the world, greatness is measured by how many people serve you. In the kingdom, greatness is measured by how many people you serve.
5) Jesus didn’t come to take a throne. He came to take a cross because that’s how He makes you new. (vs. 45)
-Real life applications: What does “not so with you” look like?
A) In your home- Questions: Spouses: “How can I absorb burdens instead of demanding my rights?” Parents: “Do my kids see me humble, repentant, and quick to serve?” Kids/teens: “Do I honor or do I use?”
B) At your workplace- The world says: climb, posture, win, outshine. Jesus says: lift others, tell the truth, share credit, protect the vulnerable. Question: Do people become more human around you—or more useful?
C) On your phone- Social media disciples people into self-idolatry, selfish display.
- The algorithms reward vanity, outrage, and “main character energy and promotion.”
- Challenge: Fast from self-promotion. Post less. Encourage more. DM someone life-giving words.
D) In the Church
- Practice: Pick a ministry role that costs you something and serves someone who likely can’t repay you.
