Gratitude (Part 2) Rescued and Thankful

Psalm 107:1-32

There's a pattern you are going to see as we work through Psalm 107:

People are in need.

They cry out to God.

God rescues them

Psalm 107:1-9

1) Gratitude starts by admitting: I am not okay doing life on my own.

  • Scene 1: They are homeless and hungry, empty and lost. They're wandering... no city, no direction, no food, no water. They are in the desert wasteland of need. (vs4-9)

Psalm 107:10-16

  • Scene 2: They are bound and stuck ion the prison of rebellion against God and His ways. (vs. 10-16)

Psalm 107:17-22

  • Scene 3: They are sinful and sick, feeling wasted and numb. They're affliction from their rebellious choices makes them physically and emotionally sick. (vs. 17-22)

Psalm 107:23-32

  • Scene 4: They are in stormy seas and feel terrified and out of control. They didn't do anything wrtong here, but are just suffering circumstances that come at us in the world sometimes.
  • There's a common theme in all of these 4 scenes: you don't develop a deep life of gratitude while you still believe that you are self-sufficient.

2) When you're desperate, don't shut down... cry out. (vs. 6, 13, 19, 28)

  • Desperation is an invitation to see God, not a dead end.

3) God rescues in power, not in half-measures. (vs. 7, 14, 20, 29-30)

4) What is the ONLY right response? Gratitude and praise. (vs. 1-2, 8, 15, 21, 31-32)

CONCLUSION: Rescued people are thankful people!
