Luke 18:9-14; James 4:6-10
1) Pride turns God into an audience and prayer into a performance. (vs.11-12)
2) Humility brings no resume, only need, and that’s why grace comes running. (vs.13)
3) Justification is received, not achieved. (vs. 14, James 4:6-10)
- Key Insight: The Pharisee doesn’t really pray to God. He prays at God while talking about himself.
- Pride isn’t just a bad attitude; it’s a false gospel. It says, “I'm accepted because I'm better.” But the gospel says, “I’m accepted because Jesus is better.”
2) Humility brings no resume, only need, and that’s why grace comes running. (vs.13)
- Most people aren’t kept from grace because they’re too sinful. They’re kept from grace because they’re too proud to admit they are sinful and need saved.
3) Justification is received, not achieved. (vs. 14, James 4:6-10)
- God opposes the proud. (He sets Himself against them)
- God gives grace to the humble. (He supplies what they lack)
