We meet three people in the book of 3 John:
1)Gaius: A Faithful and Hospitable Servant (vs.1-8)
- Gaius excelled in the gift of hospitality even though these men were strangers to him. (Rom. 12:13; Heb. 13:2)
- True hospitality involves opening your heart and home to those in need. Why?For the sake of the name. (vs.7)
2)Diotrephes: A Divisive Man (vs.9-11; Phil. 2:4; Rom. 16:17)
- The Diotrephes spirit is still alive within Christians today. How do you spot them?
- Only think about themselves
- Have a critical spirit toward those they disagree with
- Critical and often rebellious toward church leadership
- Argue over insignificant details of church life
- Cling to positions of authority at all cost
- See new people as a threat to their power
3)Demetrius: A Christian to Pattern Your Life After (vs.12-15)
- There are basically two types of Christians:
- Spiritual or Carnal
- Contributors or Detractors
- Workers or Whiners
- Positive or Negative
- Helpers or Hinderers
- God-Centered or Self Centered
- Demetrius or Diotrephes
On a scale of 1 to 10: (10=Demetrius and 1=Diotrephes)
Where do you think you are today? Where would others say you are? What does God say you are?
APPLICATION:
- Continue to walk in truth
- Continue to show hospitality to others
- Imitate what is good
