What does the Bible actually say about baptism?
Matthew 28:18-20
1) Baptism begins with the authority and call of Jesus. (vs.18)
- Jesus is both Savior AND Lord. He is our rescuer and our ruler. This is the call to come to Christ.
2) Baptism is a part of becoming a disciple of Jesus. (vs.19)
Acts 2:36-41
3) Baptism was the immediate response to the gospel. (vs.37-38)
- Repentance means turning away from sin and turning toward Jesus. Baptism is the embodied response of someone who has heard the gospel, believes that Jesus is Lord, repented of sin, and is ready to surrender to Him.
- We see this pattern throughout the book of Acts.
- The Samaritans believed and were baptized (Acts 8:12)
- The Ethiopian heard about Jesus and asked to be baptized. (Acts 8:35-38)
- Saul regained his sight and was baptized. (Acts 9:18)
- Cornelius and his household were baptized. (Acts 10:47-48)
- Lydia and her household responded to the gospel in baptism. (Acts 16:14-15)
- The Philippian jailer was baptized that same night (Acts 16:30-33)
- The Corinthians believed and were baptized (Acts 18:8)
4) The repeated pattern is hard to miss. People heard the gospel message, placed faith in Jesus, repented, and were baptized. Baptism was not separated from their response to Christ in faith or postponed until sometime later.
